The story
A deduction case inspired by a real discovery: the Altar of Jupiter from Begastri, found in Cehegín in 1878.
Cehegín, 10 September 1878. The town is in festival mode. Four days ago, Juan Fernández, a farmer, turned up a red marble stone with his plough on the Cabezo Roenas. It bears Roman letters: “IOVI OPTIMO MAXIMO · R · P · BEGASTRESIVM RESTITVIT”.
Begastri: the city of the Visigothic bishops that scholars had been seeking for centuries, and that some placed in Bigastro, near Orihuela. The stone settles it: Begastri was here. It has been brought down to the Council building on the square, and the bailiff is guarding it.
At eleven at night, after the fireworks, Don Eusebio Alarcón, the scholar who came from Orihuela, goes in with an oil lamp to study it and raises the alarm: that stone is a different one. Someone has swapped it. You have until dawn.
