Saturday 2 December 1899. At the Esperanza mine, high in the La Unión hills, the week's wages are paid today: fourteen thousand pesetas in silver duros, brought yesterday from the bank in Cartagena. At dawn, the paymaster, Leandro Martí, is found dead in the pay office, with the strongbox open and empty and the window smashed. The Civil Guard sergeant has arrested Ginés “el Picaor”, the strike leader, and at two in the afternoon he'll take him to the prison in Cartagena. You have the morning to find out who killed the paymaster, how, why and where the payroll is.
