The story
A team mystery at an art auction. The Real Casino de Murcia and Salzillo are real; the auction, the sketch and the characters are made up.
Murcia, Saturday 3 October 2026. The Real Casino is hosting a charity gala: dinner in the ballroom and an art auction in aid of the children's hospital.
Lot 12 is the star: a fired-clay sketch by Francisco Salzillo, the great 18th-century Murcian sculptor, found in the attic of a farmhouse in the huerta. It's knocked down at 22:41 for 210,000 euros.
At 23:30, in the storeroom, the director of the auction house hands it to the buyer. He lifts it, turns it and gives a joyless smile: “This is resin.” The police have shut the doors. Nobody has left the Casino.
