The story

A demanding deduction case, inspired by the real theft of the True Cross of Caravaca in 1934. The characters and the solution are fiction.

Caravaca de la Cruz, Ash Wednesday 1934. Last night, Shrove Tuesday, half the town danced in masks at the Casino until dawn.

At eight in the morning, the sacristan opened the sanctuary in the castle and found the tabernacle open and empty. The True Cross, the double-armed relic that tradition says two angels brought down in 1231, is gone. All that remains, carefully left on the altar, is its 14th-century case.

By nine the news is running through the streets. A crowd surrounds the house of the chaplain, who had a key to the tabernacle. The Assault Guards have come to protect him… and to take him under arrest to Murcia tonight. The court has put you in charge of the investigation. You have until nine tonight.
