The story

A long deduction case, inspired by the real legend of the Teatro Romea. For adults.

Murcia, 16 February 1901. The Teatro Romea reopens its doors after the fire of 1899, in which one person died. The company of María Guerrero and Fernando Díaz de Mendoza premieres “El estigma” by José Echegaray. One thousand one hundred and seventy-nine seats.

Legend has it that when the theatre was built on the grounds of the convent of Santo Domingo, a friar cursed it: it would burn three times; the third time, with every seat taken. It has already burnt twice. Since 1880, the head usher, Tomás Gil, has kept back one unsold ticket every night: stalls seat number 13.

Tonight, in the first interval, Tomás is found dead in the pit beneath the stage. And in stalls seat 13 sits a lady in mourning who insists she paid for her ticket. The theatre is full. Someone up in the gods has already started talking about the third performance.
