The story

A present-day deduction case. Cartagena's Carthaginians and Romans festival is real; the legion, the characters and the crime are made up.

Every September, Cartagena relives the war between Rome and Carthage: Carthaginian troops and Roman legions parade, clash in the Battle and fill the festival camp with barracks, music and drink until dawn.

This year, the Legio Victrix chose its general, Nando Sáez, a builder and lifelong festival-goer, as Scipio, by just two votes. Last night, after the Battle, there was a party at the barracks until half past two. As every year, Nando went off to put the legion's eagle away in the armoury himself.

At half past eight in the morning, his business partner and the legion's treasurer, Quique Nieto, found him in the armoury tent with the eagle on top of him. The police are talking about an accident: the standard weighs eight kilos and Nando had drunk a lot. At four they'll hand back the barracks… and with it, all the evidence.
