The story
A demanding deduction case. Jumilla, its grape harvest and the Monastrell grape are real; the winery, the characters and the crime are made up.
Jumilla, September 1976. Franco died ten months ago, the trade unions are emerging from hiding and at Bodegas Lucas, founded in 1902, the Monastrell harvest doesn't stop even on Sundays. The vats in the fermentation room bubble day and night, and the extractor fan is never switched off: the gas from the must kills.
Every night of the harvest, at eleven, Don Severino Lucas goes down alone to the room with a lit candle to taste the must. It's the old winemakers' custom: if the candle goes out, there's no air.
This morning, at half past six, the foreman found him dead beside vat number 3. The extractor was running and the door was open. The doctor from Jumilla says it was his heart and will sign at three. But in that same room, in 1956, the foreman's father died… and nobody has forgotten.
