The story
A demanding deduction case at Canfranc station during the Second World War. The station and its history are real; the characters and the crime are made up.
Canfranc, February 1943. The international station, a palace of iron and glass in the middle of the Pyrenees, is a border in the midst of war: through it pass wolfram for Germany, gold heading south… and people fleeing.
Last night the snow closed the pass. The train to Zaragoza was left on the line, its passengers sleeping in the sleeping car and in the station inn.
At seven in the morning, the conductor found Ernesto Lacasa, a wolfram dealer, dead in compartment 5. The Civil Guard has arrested Mateo Garcés, the luggage porter, who everyone knows helps those fleeing to cross over. When they clear the line, at seven in the evening, they'll take him to Jaca. You've been given the day.
